Martial Arts 101

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defense system that focuses on grappling, particularly ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and strangleholds to defeat the opponent.

Benefits of training BJJ include:

  • Increasing Confidence
  • Self Defense
  • Setting Goals and Achieving them
  • Character Development such as respect and humility
  • Developing a Solid Work Ethic
  • Developing Problem Solving Skills
  • Dealing with Challenging Situations
  • Improving Health (physical and mental)
  • Developing a Healthy Attitude and Ego

Thai boxing (i.e., Muay Thai) and western boxing focus on the use of strikes using your hands, fists, elbows, knees, and kicks.  In certain self-defense scenarios, you may need access to tools and techniques that are more significant in their ability to create space, control distance, and cause damage. Thai boxing is ideal for this purpose.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fastest growing sport in the world. However, unique martial art styles have been around for lifetimes. Different styles have emerged from around the world that utilize striking, joint locks, pressure points, chokeholds, throws, and takedowns. Any martial art require tremendous amounts of physical aptitude, athleticism, dedication, patience, and perseverance to master.

MMA athletes must be in peak condition in order to execute the techniques from the several disciplines that they study. MMA athletes typically train in a striking art, such as Boxing, Muay Thai, or Karate; a grappling art, such as Greco-Roman wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling, or Judo; and a submission/ground fighting art, such as BJJ, Combat Sambo, or Catch Wrestling. During an MMA bout, a fight can occur anywhere and everywhere. The physical demands can be some of the most excruciating of any professional sport. MMA athletes are often seen as the most well-conditioned athletes on the planet. Athletes from other sports have started to recognize this as well, often incorporating MMA style workouts into their off-season routines. The demands of these types of workouts are so challenging, that they have no alternative but to show up to their chosen sport in shape, if they complete the workouts.
